The original basilica was built by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century over the tomb of the Apostle Peter. The iconic dome, designed by Michelangelo and completed by Giacomo della Porta in 1590, remains one of the supreme achievements of world architecture. The basilica was consecrated in 1626, sixteen centuries after Constantine's original building.
